1. Intertidal Zone Beach Monitoring:
Students, parents and volunteers working with Consultant Marine Biologist Judith Wingate studying the intertidal zone at a series of local beaches, monitoring the health of ecosystems and removing, analysing and recycling marine litter ; sustainability of biodiversity-longitudinal study.
2. 'Wealthy Waterways', River Catchment Studies & Wetlands:
Including native fish surveys; auditing and monitoring native fish numbers and species, as an indicator of waterways health, application of Scientific method in regular beach, river and estuarine field trips, involving beach combing, rockpool studies, vertebrate and invertebrate monitoring, bird watching and data collection. 'Hands-on, outdoor classroom' activities working with a Marine Biologist, Water Scientists, and Botanist.
3. 'Native Fish':
Working with Scientists and the Native Fish Association to audit and monitor native fish numbers and species as an indicator of waterways health, focussing on greater understanding of water catchments and their importance. A long term project to breed native fish at KI Aquaculture Skills Centre for restocking local and mainland streams as part of restorative projects.
4. 'Being Black Bream':
Catching, tagging and releasing black bream in a range of estuarine areas on K I - significant Community involvement sharing information with interested agencies, SA Museum, SARDI, SAFTAG, PIRSA etc
5. 'The Pelican Brief':
An intensive study of Pelicans and breeding behaviours, with a long term view to reintroducing pelican colonies to previously viable sites on mainland KI. Incorporating the 'Pelilab' in May 2005; an Art / Science Project linking art / anatomy / behaviour of pelicans with Found Object Sculptor Indiana James followed by 'Through the Eyes of the Pelican / Bird Brain' Project in 2006, exploring the brilliance of a bird brain interpreting images from 4 kilometres above the land to a metre beneath the sea!!
6. Karatta; KI Environmental Education Centre:
Providing programs of excellence; 'Earthkeepers', Waterways and Beach Monitoring, Catchment Studies, Alien Species Studies, Biodiversity etc
7. KI Aquaculture Skills Centre:
Aquaculture and Aquaponics, barramundi and native fish breeding, Curriculum development, training, innovation, Industry and Community partnerships and applied learning
8. 'KI Dolphin Watch':
Long term dolphin research / monitoring introduced by Dr Mike Bossley, Port River Dolphins and WDCS, Verity Bone, DEH and Kathy Warhurst; WDCS developing a photographic identification catalogue of dolphins, field research and data, with input from a range of sources. Educating and working with the Community - involving Scientists, agencies; DEH and KI Natural Resources Management Board etc., commercial and recreational mariners, tourist operators, fishermen, sailors, surfers, visitors etc
9. 'Frog Watch':
Annual frog census: monitoring and studying KI's frog population - developing a frog pond on Penneshaw Campus, visiting frog experts, facilitating frog studies etc
10. 'Reef Watch':
Reef monitoring of intertidal zones, snorkelling and diving with Reef Watch Coordinators and KINRMB Scientists, coordinated by the Conservation Council of SA. Linked with recreational divers gathering information about the health of the oceans developing Community awareness of the state of marine ecosystems and triggering action for their protection
11. Sustainable Schools Initiative - 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renew':
Lessening our ecological footprint through reducing energy usage and reusing litter collected on beach monitoring sessions, into 'Works of Art'. 'From the Playground to the Sea' Community Litter collection highlighted on Clean Up Schools Day, 2005 and 2006, ongoing composting, recycling and introduction of sustainable practices
12. 'Cats - Pest or Pets?':
Examining the feral cat problem with a Critical Praxis model - alien species studies. A program developed in collaboration with KI Animal and Plant Control Board, KI Natural Resources Management Board and KI Council.
13. Island Mind Database:
Developing a database through INEX Corporation suitable for entering data collected during the range of projects and initiatives, with an interactive capacity to allow for input from other sources including DEH, KINRMB etc. - quality monitoring and upgrading, facilitating rapid dissemination of information to interested parties
14. 'On, In and Under' Aquatics / Marine & Environmental Education Links:
Sister School with Victor Harbor Primary School. Snorkelling, sailing, surfing, kayaking, boat handling, Reef Watch etc incorporating development of employable skills, accreditation etc
15. The Alan Hale Marine Archives:
Facilitating usage and availability of extensive marine archaeological resources - linked with KICE Website and islandmind.com.au database being created by INEX Corporation
16. Recycling Marine Litter into Works of Art:
'Sea Week Workshops', 'Pelilab', 'Oceans of Glass' and 'Flotsam and Jetsam Revisited' involving Community Artists Deb Sleeman and Indiana James, Scientists and volunteers working alongside Students and Staff sharing skills, knowledge and understandings, linking Art, Science and the Environment - reusing litter collected on beach monitoring sessions, creating Art works to educate the Community regarding marine and terrestrial pollution
